Income Tax Under the New Regime (FY 2025-26)

The New Tax Regime was made the default option from FY 2023-24. Under the Budget 2025 updates, the tax slabs were significantly widened to provide more relief to middle-income taxpayers. The standard deduction remains at ₹75,000. The key advantage of the New Regime is simplified tax filing — you don't need to track investments and deductions. The key disadvantage is losing deductions under 80C, 80D, HRA, and other sections.

Tax Planning Tips for Salaried Individuals

If you choose the Old Regime, maximize deductions: invest ₹1.5L in 80C (ELSS/PPF), take health insurance for 80D, claim HRA if applicable, and utilize home loan interest under Section 24(b). If you choose the New Regime, focus on maximizing employer NPS contribution (80CCD(2)) — the only major deduction available. Regardless of regime, invest your tax savings in growth assets like equity mutual funds via SIP for long-term wealth creation.

Formula & How It Works

Formula
Tax = Σ (Taxable income in each slab × Slab rate) + Surcharge + Cess

Under the New Regime, taxable income = Gross Income − ₹75,000 standard deduction.

Tax is computed slab-wise, then rebate u/s 87A is applied if eligible, followed by surcharge and 4% cess.

Worked Example

Gross Income: ₹12,00,000. Standard Deduction: ₹75,000. Taxable: ₹11,25,000.

Slab-wise: 0–3L (nil) + 3–7L (₹20,000) + 7–10L (₹30,000) + 10–11.25L (₹18,750) = ₹68,750.

No rebate (income > ₹7L). Cess = 4% of ₹68,750 = ₹2,750. Total tax = ₹71,500.

Ignoring cess — 4% Health & Education Cess adds up significantly on higher incomes.

Not realizing that rebate u/s 87A makes income up to ~₹7.75 lakh effectively tax-free under New Regime.
